The Grand Palace & Emerald Buddha

If there is one thing that you must do in Bangkok it is to visit the Grand Palace!

The Grand Palace was the official residence of the many Kings of Thailand from the 18th century onwards. Construction began in 1782, during the reign of King Rama I, when the capital was moved to Bangkok. The present King of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej does not reside here, however, the Palace is still used for many royal ceremonies that are performed here by the King every year. Royal coronations, funerals, marriages and state banquets are held here. The Palace grounds also contain the offices and buildings of the Bureau of the Royal Household, the Office of the Private Secretary to the King and Royal Institute of Thailand.

The famous Temple of the Emerald Buddha located within Wat Phra Kaew was constructed in the late 1700's as the Monarch's private place of worship and is regarded as the most sacred Buddhist temple in Thailand.

The Emerald Buddha is a dark green statue and stands 66 cm tall and is carved from a single jade stone. Only the Thai King may touch it as this Emerald Buddha is deeply revered in Thailand as the protector of the country.
