Introduction:
Koh Tao (Turtle Island) is now the leading place in the world for scuba dive certifications exceeding that of Cairns in Australia! Koh Tao is home to Backpackers Thailand's 5 star CDC scuba dive resort.
Koh Tao is located in the Gulf of Thailand approximately 60km north of Koh Phangan. It is approximately a two hour boat ride from the Southern east mainland town of Chumpon. The island is 21Km in circumference, approximately 6Km in length and 2Km wide.
King Rama V visited Koh Tao on June 18th 1899 and left his signature carved into a rock on Sairee beach. In the 1930s the island was used as a political prison when in 1947 all were released with a royal pardon. Following that, it was occupied by a small Thai community of fishermen and coconut farmers.
The first backpackers started arriving in the 1980s and thanks to its amazing reefs and underwater pinnacles it soon grew into the most popular place for divers in Asia!
